Album Notes Personnel: Joe Lovano (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Hank Jones (piano); George Mraz (bass instrument); Paul Motian (drums). Recording information: Avatar, New York, New York (09/08/2004 - 09/09/2004). Saxophonist Joe Lovano is one of the top musicians in jazz, a title substantiated--beyond his superior technical skills--by his excellent choice in projects and collaborators. JOYOUS ENCOUNTER is no exception, and surpasses even Lovano's celebrated 2004 studio release, I'M ALL FOR YOU. In large part this is attributable to the musicians backing him--drummer Paul Motian, bassist George Mraz, and pianist Hank Jones. Aside from being a jazz fan's dream come true, this quartet displays versatile, elegant, and deeply charged interplay. The material here is largely restrained post-bop, with forays into lush balladry ("Autumn in New York") and sinuous modal explorations (John Coltrane's "Crescent"). Yet the sophistication of the players makes JOYOUS ENCOUNTER much more than standard fare, giving an almost luminous sense of balance and precision to every track. Jones's elegant, intense piano work and Motian's impressionistic, textural playing, in particular, stand out, complementing the leader's bold-toned, lyrical lines on tunes by Thelonious Monk, Oliver Nelson, and Thad Jones. This is substantial, stylish, and masterful jazz.
Industry Reviews [T]he quartet proves that the coiled grace of its previous session had nothing to do with tempo and everything to do with skill and attitude.
