What can be said about Louis Armstrong that hasn't already been said? He was a very influential and much beloved figure in American music, known virtually all over the world. Early in his career, he defined jazz trumpet with his daring, brassy style, and his style of singing held sway over countless jazz and pop singers for decades. This budget-priced collection is a fine introduction to the man and his art, or it can be a fine replacement to fans' worn-out records.
Here you can sample Armstrong in small and big band settings, with jazz legends such as Jack Teagarden (trombone and vocals), "Big" Sid Catlett (drums) and Eddie Condon (guitar). This set has 14 tunes, many of which Satch performed and recorded again and again throughout of his life ("Royal Garden Blues," "St. Louis Blues") as well as songs that became hits for him later in his career ("Hello Dolly," "Mack The Knife"). It swings, it jumps, his trumpet soars towards the heavens, his voice conveys joy despite all the troubles of life. This collection is nothing less than a slice of history.
