Movie Description Set in 19th-century Cornwall, 1939's JAMAICA INN is the tale of a young woman who visits her aunt, only to discover she's residing in a haven for throat-slashing pirates. The period melodrama, one of Alfred Hitchcock's lesser-known films, features an excellent Maureen O'Hara in one of her first roles. The movie is based on Daphne Du Maurier's famous novel of the same name; Hitchcock would adapt her work again in 1940 with REBECCA.
A classic British spy mystery, and one of Hitchcock's best, THE 39 STEPS (1935) is the story of an innocent man who struggles to prove his innocence. Robert Donat gets more than he bargained for when he brings home a mysterious woman (Madeleine Carroll) who confesses that she is a British agent on the hot trail of a dangerous spy ring. The woman is killed in Donat's apartment and he immediately finds himself on the run, burdened with the charge for her murder and the dangerous knowledge of her mission. The film is distinguished by its pioneering use of contrapuntal sound effects, as well as the dynamism between Donat and Carroll.
