Synopsis
Tabucchi describes his novella as "an insomnia" but also as "a journey...in which the shadow is sought." We are taken on a nightmarish trip through the Indian subcontinent, producing sensations that are in turn exotic, sensual, menacing, and oppressive--as the profound weight of ancient culture settles on the weary and unwary traveller. Along the way someone remarks to the nameless narrator that many people lose their way in India, "it's a country made for that."
