Album Notes Jolene: Dave Burris (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, slide guitar, e-bow guitar); John Crooke (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Mike Mitschele (vocals, organ, bass); Rodney Lanier (Hawaiian steel guitar, guitar); Mike Kenerley (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Susan Cowsill, Vicki Peterson (vocals); Timothy Roven (violin); Sophie Michalitsianos, James Roven (cello); Peter Holsapple (organ, accordion). Recorded at Studio Morin Heights, Morin Heights, Quebec, Canada and Kampo Studios, New York, New York. Stuck inside of Wingate with the Manchester blues, North Carolina's Jolene is vaguely identified with the roots-rock/alt-country army, but that's just because they know Peter Holsapple and live below the Mason-Dixon line. Actually, Holsapple's presence on the band's Sire debut does provide a clue to one of the album's touchstones. Besides the atmospheric, almost regal wall of guitars that links the band to Anglo heroes like the Smiths and Echo and the Bunnymen, there's a strong R.E.M. influence at work here. It mostly shows in the decidedly non-linear approach Jolene takes to both music and lyrics throughout IN THE GLOAMING. Their southern roots are eventually betrayed by subtle guitar nuances here and there and the distinctive twang that vocalist John Crooke probably wishes he could lose in favor a British accent. For Jolene's sake, though, he should pray he never does.
