Originally written as an essay, this book is simultaneously a history of operating systems, an indictment of various corporate policies (on the parts of both Microsoft and Apple), and a look to the future of computing. Known primarily as a science fiction author, Stephenson continues his style of providing plenty of tangential technical (and personal) data here, but has written the book to be accessible to all audiences, from hard-core hackers all the way down to computer neophytes.
