Film Notes Based on Ellen Glasgow's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.
Walter Huston, the director John Huston's father, appeared in a bit role as bartender as a token of good luck for his son.
Actors from "The Maltese Falcon" appear as extras in the road-house scene.
Concerning what he liked about this film, director John Huston noted that: "It was the first time, I believe, that a black character was presented as anything other than a good and faithful servant or comic relief."
Describing the film's star, Huston said, "Bette Davis fascinated me. There is something elemental about Bette -- a demon within her which threatens to break out and eat everybody, beginning with their ears. The studio was afraid of her."
There is a computer-colored version of this film.
Quotations "I'd rather do anything than keep still." -- Stanley Timberlake (BETTE DAVIS)
