A reckless siren ruins her sister's life and eventually her own when she runs off with her sibling's husband. Based on a novel by Ellen Glasgow.
Synopsis
Selfish Stanley Timberlake abruptly breaks up with her fiancé and seduces her sister's husband, who runs away with her. After the wayward spouse gets divorced, he marries the wicked woman, but her lying, cheating ways soon drive him to suicide. Then Stanley returns home to her family, where she continues to wreak havoc on those around her. Guilty of killing a child in a hit-and-run accident, Stanley wrongly accuses a black man of the crime, but eventually the truth catches up with her.

Based on Ellen Glasgow's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.
Walter Huston, the director John Huston's father, appeared in a bit role as bartender as a token of good luck for his son.
Actors from "The Maltese Falcon" appear as extras in the road-house scene.
Concerning what he liked about this film, director John Huston noted that: "It was the first time, I believe, that a black character was presented as anything other than a good and faithful servant or comic relief."
Describing the film's star, Huston said, "Bette Davis fascinated me. There is something elemental about Bette -- a demon within her which threatens to break out and eat everybody, beginning with their ears. The studio was afraid of her."
