Additional personnel: Alison Krauss, John Wesley Ryles (vocals); Brent Mason (guitar); Mark Casstevens (acoustic guitar, ukulele); Bruce C. Bouton (pedal steel, slide guitar); Rob Hajacos (fiddle); Dennis Burnside (piano, Hammond B-3); John Barlow Jarvis (piano, synthesizer); Lonnie Wilson (drums, percussion); Dennis Wilson (background vocals). "Somewhere In The Vicinity Of The Heart," with Alison Krauss, won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration With Vocals. "Darned If I Don't (Danged If I Do)" was nominated for Best Country Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. Shenanadoah, known for its ability to find the best songs available in country music, has followed the success of the high-quality UNDER THE KUDZU with the equally successful IN THE VICINITY OF THE HEART. Led by Marty Raybon, considered one of country's finest vocalists, the band offers a soulful yet cutting-edge sound, grounded in the tight harmonies of country, gospel and pop music. Espousing the power of eternal love is a common theme, and they do so in "She Could Care Less" and "Always Have, Always Will." Dennis Linde, who has supplied country music with some of its most original songs, does so again with "Heaven Bound," and "Every Fire" is a perfect example of the richly melodic Shenandoah sound. But it is the fabulous Alisson Krauss who brings the album to its zenith, with her title track duet. Throughout, IN THE VICINITY OF THE HEART kicks and sways, moving gently from reflection to action, through poignancy and passion.
