Album Notes In the mid-'60s, Judy Collins recorded a trio of albums with arranger/producer Joshua Rifkin--an Elektra staffer also responsible for the semi-legendary novelty THE BAROQUE BEATLES BOOK--that are to this day controversial among her fans. Some find the orchestral accompaniment overbearing and pretentious, others consider them the artistic high point of Collins' long and prolific career. 1966's IN MY LIFE is one of these albums, and it's spectacular. Whether reinterpreting folk-based material in an orchestral environment (Dylan's "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues," Richard Farina's "Hard Lovin' Loser"), or sure-handedly essaying European art songs such as Bertholt Brecht and Kurt Weill's "Pirate Jenny," Jacques Brel's "La Colombe," and the suite-like "Marat/Sade," Collins and orchestra blend seamlessly. Other highlights include a fine version of Randy Newman's "I Think it's Going to Rain Today" and the definitive reading of Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne."
