Industry Reviews Virtue (Losing Your Pounds of Pain, LJ 10/1/94) and Parker, both experienced psychotherapists, argue in this book that before any couple can be happy, each partner must be happy. They present ways of guaranteeing happiness in relationships, including not expecting your partner to be clairvoyant, setting limits with your partner, and not being afraid to go out and engage in a pursuit you enjoy without your partner. Unfortunately, even though their ideas are sound, the book itself isn't worth reading. Literary style is almost nonexistent, and the vast majority of the information has been presented better elsewhere. Such books as Laura Schlessinger's 10 Stupid Things Women Do To Mess Up Their Lives (Random, 1994) and Deborah Tannen's books on communication across genders (e.g., Gender and Discourse, LJ 5/15/94) will serve most libraries better than this marginal purchase. Pamela A. Matthews, Missouri Western State Coll., St. Joseph Breitman
