Synopsis
This investigation into the collaboration between the Third Reich and International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) during Hitler's rise to power and World War II implicates the American company and its German subsidiary. The author asserts that IBM's efficiency and technology made it possible to keep stunningly accurate and voluminous records of the program for extermination and helped to expedite it. Black also investigates whether IBM knew how its technology was being used, and whether the company attempted to hide its role both during and after the war.

Industry Reviews
"Mr. Black, in his fervor to find I.B.M. culpable, weighs only punch cards in this particular balance. Of course, he is right that it would have been better had I.B.M. not sold them to Hitler. It would have been better had many things been done differently by many people. Mr. Black's case is long and heavily documented, and yet he does not demonstrate that I.B.M. bears some unique or decisive responsibility for the evil that was done."
New York Times - Richard Bernstein (03/07/2001)

"IBM & THE HOLOCAUST often sidesteps the deeper questions of technology, society and the manner in which corporate organizational structures diffuse individual and institutional responsibility....Similarly, Black's extended description of internecine IBM squabbles often adds bulk but not much light to the text. Be that as it may, IBM & THE HOLOCAUST is a valuable contribution to our understanding of the Holocaust. It also capably describes the strategies of concealment pursued by corporations when their operations might come under unwelcome scrutiny--and suggests new ways for us to understand the role of seemingly innocuous technologies in human cruelty. It is a particularly disturbing case study...."
Washington Post Book World - Christopher Simpson (03/18/2001)

"An important contribution to Holocaust studies."
Nation - John Friedman (05/21/2001)
