Though he remained a tireless and hugely successful concert performer, the music business took him off its high-priority list. Admittedly of varying quality, much of his material from this period remained unavailable for ages, though occasional reissues like this one allow the modern-day Cash fan to connect the dots of this hazy phase of the country legend's career.Fans of the bare-bones sound on Cash's early recordings may be put off by Larry Butler's big, Nashville-friendly production, but that doesn't mean there aren't good songs to be found here. "I Wish I Was Crazy Again," a duet with running buddy Waylon Jennings, is a fitting elegy for the outlaw country period that was just beginning its downhill slide in 1977. The Cash-penned Abner Brown is one of Johnny's trademark homegrown character studies. "After Taxes" is a light-hearted romp that skewers Uncle Sam's minions in the IRS. Cash fans who are willing to wade through the ubiquitous, overbearing background vocals and similar touches will find some rare pleasures on this album.
