Synopsis "I Malavoglia," published in 1881, represents a pinnacle of realist style depicting a story of Sicilian fisherman and adopting Sicilian syntax, cadences, peasant speech, and folk narrative in a surprisingly modern example of polyphony. Verga would wait in vain for critical praise from the provincially prejudiced intellectuals of Northern Italy, and--although the novel sold well--he seemingly lost his grander literary ambitions in exchange for writing stage plays, opera, and screenplays, which ultimately brought both money and fame.

Industry Reviews "Most of the crucial action is reported, as in a classical tragedy. What remains are linguistic gestures, whose poetic strangeness is emphasized but through which the humanity of the characters is paradoxically thrown into relief....Everything is understated and decorous, and the emotional effect is overwhelming." Times Literary Supplement - Peter Hainsworth (07/12/1996)
