THE BEST OF SYLEENA JOHNSON skims the cream from the R&B singer's first three albums on Jive Records. The daughter of `60s R&B artist Syl Johnson, Syleena borrows from the legacy of vintage soul, but puts it in the context of urban contemporary and hip-hop. That blend finds its expression in her singles, all of which are featured here.
Guest stars boost the stature of Johnson's tracks, with Busta Rhymes joining her on "Tonight I'm Gonna Let Go," and R. Kelly and Fabolous appearing on "Hypnotic." But it's Johnson's raspy, soulful vocals that ultimately put these tunes over. Those who've missed Johnson's studio albums and are looking for a well-compiled overview should pick this up.
