Industry Reviews This [book's] clever format provides two levels of text: one a simple story for quite young readers, and another, under the flap, a more involved scientific lesson. The colourful illustrations do an excellent job of supporting the text, with pictures that are lively and involving. . . . Adults should perhaps be forewarned that in Hungry Animals, the animals really do kill and eat other creatures, and that the illustrations clearly show this.

Hungry Animals delivers, professionally, an ecology concept (the food chain) in a vocabulary young children can understand. The simple text creates a charming, repetitive singsong that is likely to be recited over and over by little ones while jumping about and gesturing to portray each item mentioned. 'This is the snake, that swallowed the toad, that gobbled the bug, that ate the . . .' andso on, until the whole chain is complete. . . . The view of each step in the chain is artistically illustrated in color. Lifting a flap atop each picture shows and tells a few easy scientific concepts related to the herbivores and carnivores portrayed. A one-page 'Note to Parents' . . . supplies the adult who may be turning pages with a few additional facts without getting into concepts too deep or far afield.
