Album Notes The Paul Bley Group: Paul Bley (piano); John Scofield (electric guitar); Steve Swallow (electric bass); Barry Altschul (drums). Recorded at Lush Life, New York, New York on March 10, 1985. Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff. HOT is a mid-'80s recording that pianist Paul Bley made with guitarist John Scofield, drummer Barry Altschul and bass player Steve Swallow. Throughout his career, Bley has rarely worked with guitarists, though his album of duets with Sonny Greenwich, OUTSIDE IN, is a fine exception. At the time of this recording, the two members of the rhythm section had played with Bley, singly or together, over the preceding two decades. The quartet, recorded here in a live New York City performance, revisit some work long associated with Bley, including Ornette Coleman's "When Will the Blues Leave Me," Carla Bley's "Syndrome," and the pianist's own "Around Again." These are four well-matched players who all utilize the drama of lingering notes and austere silences--long a key characteristic of Paul Bley's work.
