Personnel: Louie Bellson (drums); Kenny Hitchcock, Don Menza, George Young, Joe Roccisano (saxophone); Brian O'Flaherty, Glenn Drewes, Danny Cahn, Larry Lunetta (trumpet); Clark Terry (flugelhorn); Don Mikkelsen, Keith O'Quinn (trombone); John Bunch (piano); Jay Leonhart (bass instrument). The late Louie (or Louis) Bellson was one of the few jazz drummers that could be considered a peer of icon Buddy Rich. Like Rich, he toiled in the big bands of others (Goodman, Dorsey, Ellington) before striking out on his own. Also like Rich, Bellson led a successful big band well into the post-rock & roll eras. HOT was recorded (and originally released) in 1987, and it's a hard-swinging mix of jazz veterans (Don Menza, guest Clark Terry), relative newcomers, and ace arrangers (Rich Wilkins, Tonight Show's Tommy Newsom). Fans of modern big bands should snap this up.
