Album Notes Personnel includes: Chuck Prophet (vocals, guitar); Stephanie Finch (vocals, accordion, piano, organ); Max Butler (guitar, mandolin); Greg Leisz (pedal steel); Anders Rundblad (bass); Paul Revelli (drums). Musical trends had finally caught up with Chuck Prophet by the time of 1997's HOMEMADE BLOOD, the Northern California singer/songwriter fourth solo album following the dissolution of his seminal '80s roots-rock band Green On Red. The then-new alt-country scene trumpeted by the likes of "No Depression" magazine was producing the sort of music Prophet had been making for years, so HOMEMADE BLOOD slotted in perfectly alongside folks like Wilco or Uncle Tupelo. Less radio-ready than its predecessor, 1995's FEAST OF HEARTS, the album is a rollicking, stripped-down affair featuring sterling contributions from longtime Prophet cronies Stephanie Finch (on accordion and Emmylou Harris-like backing vocals) and Greg Leisz (on steel guitar). Among the many highlights, the touching "KMart Family Portrait" is like a '90s version of Gram Parsons' "$1000 Wedding."
Industry Reviews ...Prophet takes an expatriate approach to his music...by skewing vintage takes on Americana...with across-the-pond experimentalism....Chris Whitley and Wilco, among others, have mined similar territory in the last year, but Prophet's bleary-eyed desperation...and saw toothed playing forge a path altogether different and darker... 3 Stars (out of 5) - ...this is big, obvious bar-room fare with catchy riffs, `committed' singing....and his songs don't mess about. Q (04/01/1997)
