HOMELAND was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best World Music Album.
Grammy Award-winning chanteuse Miriam Makeba finds an exciting space between her South African roots and the world of international pop on HOMELAND. This extraordinary woman seems to bring several lifetimes worth of experience to the microphone, as an exiled anti-apartheid activist, author, ambassador, and actress--she even sang at JFK's infamous 1962 birthday celebration! The result is music that is groovy, graceful, and wise, with a revolutionary yet maternal brand of soulfulness. The recording further benefits from the touch of producer Cedric Gradus Samson, who co-wrote the score to the T.V. epic MANDELA.
The potent "Masakhane" makes a scintillating marriage of traditional and modern musical elements, with its cyclical polyrhythms, luscious group vocal harmonies, fiery electric guitar bursts, and blustery organ riffs. "Unhome" is a slow-rolling, pensive piece, with Makeba forceful and throaty in her delivery over a backdrop of soft piano and cresting waves of background chanting. The updated, dance-happy remake of her 1967 Top-10 hit "Pata Pata" rolls along like a kindred spirit to Deee-Lite's classic club anthem "Groove Is in the Heart." The variety of rhythms and instrumental textures here creates an overall superb sounding board for Makeba's voice.
