Synopsis
Written with a self-awareness, humility, vividness, and humor that are typically lacking in a celebrity autobiography, HOME: A MEMOIR OF MY EARLY YEARS depicts Julie Andrews's hardscrabble English childhood growing up with her alcoholic mother and violent stepfather. After developing her singing talents, she joined her parents' vaudeville act, and by the time she turned 15 had become a tremendous success, despite her terrible shyness and isolation. Andrews doesn't play up these elements for sympathy or sentiment, but instead allows the scenes and characters to speak for themselves, resulting in a moving portrait of her life as a young performer.
