Synopsis
Set in Lancashire at the turn of the century, "Hobson's Choice" recounts a widower's attempt to control the lives of his three daughters. A cobbler by trade, Hobson employs them in his shop at low wages. But his shrewd eldest daughter, whom he considers over the hill, marries his illiterate assistant against his wishes. Then, she and her new husband go into business successfully in competition with him.

The father-daughter rivalry continues until Hobson's heavy drinking finally takes its toll on him, and the stubborn man is forced to go to his scorned son-in-law for help.

Film Notes
Originally a stage play, "Hobson's Choice," was filmed previously in 1931 by Thomas Bentley, with a screenplay by Frank Launder, and featuring James Harcourt, Viola Lyel and Frank Pettingell.

It was remade again in 1983 as an American TV movie. This version is set in New Orleans during 1914, and stars Richard Thomas and Sharon Gless. Lillian Gish appears in a small role.

The print used for the Home Vision Cinema VHS version is from the Janus collection.

Additional cast: Dorothy Gordon (Ada Figins); Madge Brindley (Mrs. Figgins); Jack Howarth (Tubby Wadlow); and Herbert C. Walton (Printer).

Made at Shepperton Studios, England.
