Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios). This collection is an effective--though incomplete-- introduction to the immensely varied phases of Louis Armstrong's career. The two-disc set opens with a few early non-Decca tracks, which although good, are seemingly chosen at random. Next up is a generous helping of material from the late '30s and early '40s (featuring a similar line-up to that of Decca's POCKETFUL OF DREAMS) that includes some of Satchmo's best and most sensitive playing. The collection also includes a number of Armstrong collaborations with Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Jordan, Billie Holiday, and others. Though some tracks may seem excessively sentimental, they are all entertaining and serve as a testament to Armstrong's supreme musicality and versatility. Also included are several tracks with Louis's All-Stars, his fantastic later band, which effectively show the rootsier of the Armstrong. Especially charming is a hilarious live duet with vocalist Velma Middleton on "Baby it's Cold Outside."
