Synopsis
Susanna Sonnenberg's mesmerizing and titillating personal memoir tells of her wildly dysfunctional upbringing at the hands of her wealthy and debauched Manhattan parents. After a divorce, her father quickly slips to the sidelines, and her overbearing, beautiful, drug-addicted, promiscuous, compulsive-liar mother takes center stage, acting, at turns, as a delightful sidekick, and as a manipulative abuser. For most of her childhood, Susanna acts as surrogate parent for her siblings and mother, helping her siblings prepare for school and go to the dentist, while, at times, helping her mother inject her drugs. Finally, in college, her mother's hedonistic influence begins to catch up with Susanna, and she finds herself slipping into deceit, drugs, and rampant sex. In the end, a relationship with a sober and clear-eyed man helps save her from lunacy, though her painful and conflicted emotions towards her mother continue. Susanna is a marvelous writer, who abstains from psychobabble or victimization, and instead plainly narrates a truly remarkable tale, both devastating and transcendent, a triumph of the personal non-fiction form.
