Synopsis This graphic novel collects in full color the first nine issues of HELLBLAZER, a dark, sardonic comic series starring antihero John Constantine, a hard-drinking, chain-smoking occult magician with an unsavory reputation and dubious morals. The 2005 film CONSTANTINE starring Keanu Reaves is very loosely based on the series. For the most part, these early issues are set in late eighties in Thatcherite England, a grim milieu of poor economic times and a constant tension on the streets which often erupts into violence. It is always made clear that humans are just as capable of petty or profound evil as are the demons that figure in the storyline. In the nine issues presented here, Constantine battles with a hunger demon and demonic soul brokers, and is then caught in a conflict between the demon-inspired thugs of Damnation's Army and the religious fanatics of the Resurrection Crusade. Throughout the various stories, Constantine's friends, lovers, and relatives are a frequent casualty of his activities, a fact which haunts him near to madness, but does not prevent him from doing what he must.
