From the visceral surprise of the opening beats on "Whipped," with their pronounced hip-hop inflection, it's clear that vocalist Jon Secada is approaching his role as a classic R&B crooner from a slightly different angle. Gifted with a rich voice and tremendous emotional range, HEART, SOUL & A VOICE resonates like a sweet voice from the past, the opening fusillade in a return to dulcet soul music stylings.
Secada's Afro-Cuban roots set him apart from much of the R&B crowd, and the arrangements he favors give his lilting vocals a powerful rhythmic push. Strings and lush vocal choruses vie for center stage with a taut go-go beat on his beguiling power ballad "If You Go." Yet on "Good Feeling" he goes the other way and evokes the suave Marvin Gaye of "Sexual Healing," and a pleading lover in the Eddie Kendricks tradition on "Where Do I Go From You" with his keening falsetto cries.
HEART, SOUL & A VOICE is sexy, adult pop, with tasteful colorations and taut, focused dance grooves. Secada is a romantic shooting star for the '90s.

Industry Reviews
...HEART, SOUL & A VOICE sounds like Secada's earnest attempt to reposition himself as a state-of-the-art rhythm & blues singer, to invoke older musical styles that have meant a lot to him, and to add something original to them... - Rating: B+
