Album Notes CONSCIOUSNESS Personnel: Pat Martino (guitar); Eddie Green (electric piano, percussion); Tyrone Brown (bass); Sherman Ferguson (drums). Producer: Michael Cuscuna. Engineer: Tony May. Recorded at Generation Sound Studio, New York City, New York on October 7, 1974. Originally released on Muse (5039). Includes liner notes by Gary Giddens. LIVE! Personnel: Pat Martino (guitar); Ron Thomas (electric piano); Tyrone Brown (electric bass): Sherman Ferguson (drums). Recorded live at Folk City, New York City, New York in September 1972. Originally released on Muse (5026). Includes liner notes by Dan Morgenstern. HEAD AND HEART: CONSCIOUSNESS/LIVE! includes liner notes by Joel Dorn. Ah, if only it were somehow possible to make a breakfast cereal out of Pat Martino's guitar lines. While the feel of the material and ensemble on each volume of HEAD AND HEART may differ, Martino's playing consistently exhibits the consummate blend of discipline, freedom, melodic sense and astoundingly dead-on quick-picking that made him the beacon that he is. CONSCIOUSNESS contains a lovely spread of compositions, opening briskly with Coltrane's "Impressions," leading to the foreboding modal shadows of of the title track. Ferguson's crashes, zings and assorted percussive spices combine with Brown's strong groove sense and Green's lush Fender Rhodes harmonies to create compelling environments. Martino strikes out solo on "Passata on Guitar" and Joni Mitchell's bittersweet "Both Sides Now." LIVE, recorded at Folk City in Greenwich Village, breaks from the brevity and relative convention of the first volume with three gloriously extended, somewhat psychedelic performances reminiscent of the explorations found on EAST. There's not a note wasted as this band gets going.
