Album Notes Relatively free of formal or dramatic pretension, Haydn's piano concertos are pure pleasure. Rare pleasure, too: for the composer of a hundred symphonies and dozens of string quartets was neither a keyboard virtuoso nor, would it seem, much intrigued by the possibilities of the concerto, thus leaving behind, at best guess, only a half dozen such works for organ, harpsichord or pianoforte. Two of them are here, the thoughtful G major and the effervescent D major, both well-known, mature works of almost certifiable authenticity, and along for the ride is an F-major concerto of murkier origins which may have been written by Haydn or his older contemporary Georg Wagenseil. Regardless of provenance, however, Pletnev dispatches them all in much the same manner as in his earlier all-Haydn solo recital for Virgin, with great care and wit.
