Album Notes Despite issuing three exceptionally strong records for Epic (1976's I DON'T WANT TO GO HOME, 1977's THIS TIME IT'S FOR REAL, and 1978's HEARTS OF STONE), Southside Johnny And The Asbury Jukes were dropped by the label in 1979. Their fine blend of soul and bar band rock failed to cross over to the masses as successfully as similar artists, such as Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seger, and the J. Geils Band. HAVIN' A PARTY WITH SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY was issued the same year the group was sent packing. Although future compilations would boast a longer track listing (namely the 19-track 1992 BEST OF SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY), HAVIN' A PARTY is fine meat and potatoes collection. Such early highlights as the title track (a Sam Cooke cover), "I Don't Want to Go Home," "Fever," and "When You Dance," have all aged splendidly.
Industry Reviews 3 Stars (out of 5) - ...this is the sound of hope, of optimism, of a group of friends banding together and becoming truly greater than the sum of their parts. Q (04/01/1997)
