Gr 3-6 Ireland's Blarney Stone, famed to give the gift of eloquence to anyone who kisses it, is at the heart of a sinister plot masterminded by the elusive Carmen Sandiego and executed by one of her V.I.L.E. henchmen. It's up to Maya and Ben, ACME junior detectives, to keep on her trail and retrieve the stone before it's too late. In tracking it down, the children travel to Ireland, Germany, Tunisia, the Galapagos Islands, and Nepal, among other countries. Only cursory information is given at each locale, however, and there's no map at the beginning of each chapter to show readers the location of the area visited. With regard to the geographical connection, the computer software that sparked the series of Carmen-related multimedia products is far superior. The book's main goal, however, is to amuse rather than educate. The cast of supporting characters is colorful, but the clues are not well developed, and the techno-gadgets that help the children apprehend the criminal are unrealistic and may insult today's techno-savy kids.
