Album Notes Soul Asylum: Dave Pirner (vocals, guitar, saxophone, piano); Dan Murphy (guitar, background vocals); Karl Mueller (bass); Grant Young (drums, percussion). Recorded at Skyline Studios and Sound On Sound Studios, New York, New York. Soul Asylum's HANG TIME was the band's first major-label release, and brought all the attendant trappings of fame, including a smattering of "sell-out" cries from longtime fans. In retrospect, perhaps Soul Asylum's fans should have known better--HANG TIME merely raises the standards set by the band's previous records. The only real difference in the band's aesthetic is a more muscular, amped-up guitar sound. Meanwhile, Dave Pirner's lyrics reach a peak on this album, and he gives nearly every song has at least one truly clever turn of phrase. The '70s-style rockers that mark the album's opening give way to Soul Asylum's first masterpiece, "Sometime to Return." From its swelling opening to cigarette-scarred vocals and sing-along lyrics, this is a great rock song. "Cartoon," penned by guitarist Dan Murphy, chugs along with a relaxed but heavy groove. The rolling "Marionette" adds piano to the mix. "Twiddly Dee" is a funny country pastiche with faux-roots lyrics. "Put the Bone In" (a Terry Jacks cover originally from the flipside of his "Seasons in the Sun" single), a throwaway bonus track, mines a rather adolescent double entendre. This record ought to have put Soul Asylum on the top of every radio playlist in the pop-rock world.
