Movie Description A collection of three classic World War II films. Includes, A WALK IN THE SUN starring Lloyd Bridges, John Ireland, and Dana Andrews; WE DIVE AT DAWN starring John Mills; and THE NORTH STAR starring Dana Andrews, Walter Huston, and Anne Baxter.
A WALK IN THE SUN: The setting is WWII Italy, with Dana Andrews starring as Sgt. Tyne, one of the officers leading a platoon in an attempt to take a farmhouse in the Italian countryside, which is now a German stronghold. As the troops prepare to attack, they contemplate the lives that have led them to this place and think about how to most effectively do their jobs. The men repeat their mantra, hoping it will be a talisman: "Nobody dies."
WE DIVE AT DAWN: John Mills stars as Lt. Freddie Taylor, a British submarine Captain, in this WWII tale of naval warfare in the Baltic. The crew of the Sea Tiger are summoned from shore leave with their families and sent on a secret mission to intercept the Nazi battleship Brandenburg. In the ensuing battle the submarine sustains damage from depth charges from a German destroyer. After a tense time playing dead, the sub eludes the Germans but is leaking fuel so badly that the crew will be unable to make it back to England before running out of fuel somewhere along the Danish coast. When it seems that their only option may be to blow up the submarine and try to escape to Denmark, seaman James Hobson (Eric Portman) hatches a plan. Since he speaks German he puts on the uniform of a captured German airman and goes into a small port on a Danish island in search of a tanker from which to refuel. Working from a well constructed script, Anthony Asquith, best know for adapting stage works (PYGMALION, THE BROWING VERSION), adds a strong sense of dramatic tension to the interactions between the men in the dangerous, claustrophobic atmosphere of the cramped submarine. Mills and Portman give good, realistic portrayals of men at war in this tense story of submarine warfare.
THE NORTH STAR: Playwright Lillian Hellman wrote the script for this WWII propaganda effort, starring Walter Huston as Dr. Kurin, the physician of a Russian village which comes under attack by Nazi forces. At the outset, all is well in the bucolic village of North Star. But while Kolya (Dana Andrews), an off-duty air force pilot and his brother Damian (Farley Granger) are on a walking tour near the village, they are strafed by Luftwaffe pilots who quickly move on to attack the village. The Russians are quickly forced to prepare for the oncoming invasion.
