Album Notes While Alicia de Larrocha can boast wide accomplishments in many musical repertoires, it is as a champion of the piano literature of her native Spain that she is best loved and will probably be remembered. Probably no-one has done as much in the second half of the 20th century to popularize the evocative and often fiendishly difficult music of Albéniz, Granados, de Falla and others, and this collection rightly showcases her work in this repertoire. De Larrocha's subtle treatment of tempo and rubato, the spontaneity of her attack and the dancing vigor of her staccatos, the skill with which she differentiates timbres on the keyboard and isolates voices within dense textures-all of these qualities make her landmark 1972 recording of Albéniz's suite 'Iberia' a joyous experience. The passions of Spanish song and dance, filtered and transformed through an impressionistic lens, are elegantly realized here. But 'Iberia' is only the centerpiece of a recital ranging from the refined classical era sonatas of Soler, the noble and lyrical excerpts from Granados' 'Goyescas,' and the aromatic, harmonically spiced settings of traditional Catalan melodies by Mompou. De Larrocha's achievement in the Spanish repertoire is admirably served by this collection.
