Album Notes 2 LPs on 1 CD. This double album finds the Blues Boy at his sassiest. These sessions, recorded in 1966 and '68, some with B.B.'s usual horn-driven combo, some augmented (tastefully) by an orchestra, reveal a performer at his peak, at ease with both the musical milieu and his place in it. Though there are a few well-known blues tunes here, there are no real B.B. hits, which means King is free to explore the blues catalogue to his heart's content. He comes up with several gems in the process. The most prevalent character presented in these songs is the lover-done-wrong exacting his revenge, and these tunes are sung by King with a cathartic glee that is infectious. On "Tired of Your Jive," "Baby Get Lost," the super-funky "Heartbreaker," "That's Wrong, Little Mama" and others, B.B. lets his significant other know which end is up in no uncertain terms, detailing his complaints and informing her that the game is up. This mode is employed so extensively here that GREAT MOMENTS is practically a concept album. Think of it as ONLY THE LONELY with a big, bluesy chip on its shoulder.
