Denby had first taken "Contemporary Civilization," Columbia's legendary survey class of Western philosophy in 1961. Many years later, intrigued by the ferocity of the "culture wars" he had seen debated in the press, he decided to sit in on two semesters of Contemporary Civilization and record his--and his classmates'--impressions to the great works of Western philosophy and their effect on present-day minds and sensibilities.
