In the early 1950s, Memphis, Tennessee was an afterthought in the world of commercial recording, then dominated by studios in New York and Los Angeles. This situation was radically altered in 1953, when Elvis Presley walked into the city's Sun Studios, encountered producer Sam Phillips, and subsequently developed and recorded the first rock & roll single, "That's All Right."
