Album Notes The New Jack Swing movement of the 1980s found R&B updating itself from the funk and soul that had dominated the `70s, and moving toward a synth-heavy dance music that incorporated elements of club music, traditional soul, and hip-hop. GOLD: NEW JACK SWING is a primer on the sound: it features the movement's most important artists, including Bobby Brown, whose "My Prerogative" epitomizes New Jack, and Boyz II Men, whose Motown and Philly soul-inspired harmonies and arrangements redefined contemporary quiet storm. The two-disc set also features El Debarge, Color Me Badd, En Vogue, and others, giving a representative sample of the genre. Some of the tunes hold up quite well, but the set is perfectly designed as a nostalgia time capsule, bringing back memories of flattop fades, hair spray, shoulder-padded jackets, and the golden age of MTV.
