GOD BLESS THE CHILD brings together some of Holiday's signature tunes, including the title track, "Lover Man," and "T'Aint Nobody's Business If I Do." Hard line Lady Day fans may take issue with the heavy string orchestrations that fleshes out the sound of this set--and with the somewhat over-the-top backing chorus on "God Bless The Child."
While the instrumentation is clearly an attempt at broadening Holiday's appeal to reach the modern pop market, such tracks as "Them There Eyes" actually sound right at home with these new arrangements. The focal point, of course, is Holiday's voice. She sounds as good here as ever--wistful, sensual, pained, and sensitively nuanced. "You're My Thrill" and "Keeps On Rainin'" are excellent examples of her legendary art, proffering further proof that Holiday's flame burns brightly in any context.
