Synopsis
Author Jonathan Kirsch (THE HARLOT BY THE SIDE OF THE ROAD) describes the war fought in the fourth century between an Egyptian pharaoh, a Jewish king, and a Roman emperor. The true battle taking place in this "last stand of paganism" was between monotheism and polytheism. Hirsch explores the roots of monotheism which began, he asserts, with the efforts of the Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaton and not, as believed, with Judaism. He probes the conflicts between monotheism and polytheism as Judaism and Christianity developed, and offers a discussion on how monotheism led to crusades, holy wars, and inquisitions, as polytheists upheld their right to worship more than one god.
