Album Notes Personnel: Carla Bley (piano); Steve Swallow (electric bass). Recorded at Grog Kill Studio, Willow, New York in Summer 1992. This is the second album of duets from this piano and bass playing pair, following 1988's DUETS. As with the early offering, an easy rapport between Bley and Swallow (attributable to their long professional and personal relationship) lends this album a true spirit of connectedness. Bley's past work often utilized fairly large ensembles. It is therefore a joy to hear her in the light of GO TOGETHER'S naked and sympathetic interplay-both as a player and as a composer. Bley is a confident and inventive pianist. Her approach is not unlike that of other pianist-composers (Ellington comes to mind immediately). Her soloing stresses its identity as variations on the melodic theme of the piece being played. Swallow's style on the electric bass guitar (his sole instrument since permanently abandoning his string bass in the early '70s) alternates nicely between being a well-rooted bottom and a soloing voice.
Industry Reviews 4 Stars - Very Good - ...Swallow's plectrum-style bass technique and high-range ventures gives his lines a singing guitaristic quality that neatly complements Bley's always understated, underrated savvy as a pianist... Down Beat (08/01/1993)
3 Stars - Good - ...This duo disc features the two of them playing variations on their own pieces, with Bley's slightly the quirkier and more characterful...Subtle, intimate, and off-center... Q (07/01/1993)
...the duo is frisky, warm and playful throughout, twirling around each other with ease and grace... Option (09/01/1993)
