About this Book
Synopsis
Famous as the author of the self-help classic THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED, M. Scott Peck tells of another path he took, when he performed two exorcisms on people whom he first considered to be psychiatric cases and whom he later was convinced were possessed by the devil. He tells of his experiences as he moved from scientific skeptic to open-minded believer in Satan as reality. Peck was introduced to exorcism by Father Malachy Martin shortly after THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED was published. As a psychiatrist, Peck had an interest in the abnormal, which led to these encounters with the paranormal. His first exorcism was a slam-dunk success; his second was an all-out battle, which he says he lost. In recalling these events, which took place 25 years before he wrote this book, Peck puts forth an argument that science and religion need to close the wide gulf between them, and the provocative idea that exorcism, as an intervention, be considered a treatment option in extreme cases.
