About this Book
Synopsis
William Burroughs returns to one of the themes of CITIES OF THE RED NIGHT, with pirates setting up their own country; Captain Mission in the 18th century established a "free pirate settlement, Libertatia, on the west coast of Madagascar." Libertatia's laws prohibit the harming of the lemurs that live on the island. There is a temple on the island which Captain Mission regards as the "entrance to the biological Garden of Lost Chances." When the temple is destroyed, the lemurs lose hope of evolving into a higher species. Burroughs then documents the wiping out of other species by humanity's greed, religion, political jostling, and diseases.

Industry Reviews
"It would be pointless to recount the plot. In a Burroughs story, it's not who does what that matters, it's the wild ride everybody takes in getting there. Readers familiar with 'Cities of the Red Night' will recognize his 17th-century pirates and plagues; readers familiar with just about any of Burroughs' work will recognize his hallucinatory genius."
Small Press - S. A. Stolnack

"...[T]hus--for the balance of the book--is unleashed the formidable power of Burroughs the essayist of conscience, agony and vitriol....Burroughs, in all, as the high lyric poet of wretched lost hopes. Or maybe not wholly lost: At the books' end is an address, with an appeal for funds to help save the lemurs."
