Movie Description
A pair of sisters--one a strung-out, would-be rock star with more drive than talent and the other a wildly successful folk rock singer--struggle with their differences in this well-textured drama. Seattle's music scene provides the setting for the musical performances, all of which were recorded live.
Synopsis
A tale of intense sibling rivalry between two sisters who are also both singers. Georgia is a happy, popular and successful folk singer, who's self-assured enough to place her husband and kids before her career. In stark contrast, her younger sibling Sadie is an angry, untalented, childish, substance-abusing punk rocker. Sadie is obsessively jealous of her sister's fame and home life, so Georgia wants as little to do with her as humanly possible.
After a particularly horrific falling-out between the sisters, Georgia finally reaches the end of her rope. Now Sadie must find a way to make peace with both herself and her family -- before she completely self-destructs.

The film's music sequences were recorded live, including one in which Jennifer Jason Leigh performs an eight-and-a-half minute version of Van Morrison's `Take Me Back' (in front of an audience of over 1,000 concert extras) that was shot in two takes.
The film won the Best Picture award and Jennifer Jason Leigh won the best actress award at the 1995 Montreal Film Festival.
Jennifer Jason Leigh was a runner-up for best actress of 1995 in voting by the National Society of Film Critics and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.
Mare Winningham won an Independent Spirit Award for best supporting actress.
