Synopsis In a savage society that shuns the weak, a lame orphan named Kira is allowed to live only because she is an amazingly talented weaver. Given the responsibility of restoring the historic robe that is worn during the village's annual Ruin Song Gathering (an event that retells the history of their society), Kira is taken from her rundown hut and sent to live at the elegant Council Edifice. There she meets two other young artists, both of whom are also orphans and who, like her, have gifts more powerful than any of them fully understand. As Kira settles into her new role, she discovers a long-held secret about her society and begins to realize that she might have the power to change her entire world. This is a loose companion to the story begun in THE GIVER and continued in MESSENGER., Lame and suddenly orphaned, Kira is mysteriously removed from her squalid village to live in the palatial Council Edifice, where she is expected to use her gifts as a weaver to do the bidding of the all-powerful Guardians.
