Synopsis
In a savage society that shuns the weak, a lame orphan named Kira is allowed to live only because she is an amazingly talented weaver. Given the responsibility of restoring the historic robe that is worn during the village's annual Ruin Song Gathering (an event that retells the history of their society), Kira is taken from her rundown hut and sent to live at the elegant Council Edifice. There she meets two other young artists, both of whom are also orphans and who, like her, have gifts more powerful than any of them fully understand. As Kira settles into her new role, she discovers a long-held secret about her society and begins to realize that she might have the power to change her entire world. This is a loose companion to the story begun in THE GIVER and continued in MESSENGER., Lame and suddenly orphaned, Kira is mysteriously removed from her squalid village to live in the palatial Council Edifice, where she is expected to use her gifts as a weaver to do the bidding of the all-powerful Guardians.

Publisher's Notes
First Line: ""Mother?"<BR> There was no reply. She hadn't expected one. Her mother had been dead now for four days, and Kira could tell that the last of her spirit was drifting away."

Industry Reviews
"Readers will find plenty of material for thought and discussion here....A top writer, in top form."
Douglas

"...Kira is a resolute, doughty character whose struggle to take control of her artistic destiny may inspire young readers seeking to take control of their own futures."
Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books - Janice M. Del Negro (11/01/2000)
