This release offers two full albums on one disc--1969's THROB and GARY BURTON & KEITH JARRETT, released 18 months later in 1971. THROB augments Burton's quartet--guitarist Jerry Hahn, bassist Steve Swallow, and drummer Bill Goodwin--with violinist Richard Greene. The nine selections find the quintet tackling four new pieces by Michael Gibbs and three by Swallow--including the humorous "Chickens" and the gorgeous "Arise, Her Eyes." Greene's violin is a well-matched counterpoint voice for both Hahn's guitar and Burton's vibes.
The quintet for Burton's collaboration with Jarrett includes the same rhythm section as THROB but sees Sam Brown replacing Hahn as guitarist. Four of the five pieces are by Jarrett, with the fifth number being Swallow's Spanish-tinged "Como En Vietnam." Jarrett's melodic exuberance is perfectly suited to the sparkling character of Burton's vibraphone, and his harmonic invention allows the piano to wrap around the vibes in warm and sympathetic ways.
