Movie Description A hypothetical thriller, FULL FATHOM FIVE takes place in the days preceding the U.S.'s 1989 invasion of Panama. The script predicts what might have happened had word leaked out about America's decision to take serious action in the Central American country. After Panamanian rebels seize a nuclear Soviet submarine, the sub's captain uses his newfound power to threaten America with an impending attack on Houston, Texas. Meanwhile, U.S. Navy submarine Captain Peter MacKenzie (Michael Moriarty) finds himself falling in love with Justine (Maria Rangel), a Panamanian whom he rescued after she became stranded at sea. With diplomacy at a stalemate and the countdown to doomsday already underway, it is up to MacKenzie and his crew to tackle the enemy in a tense underwater dogfight. Director Carl Franklin, whose talent began to blossom more fully with his next film, the stylish and inventive ONE FALSE MOVE, shows his ability to work on a low budget and craft a film that has the flare of a Hollywood blockbuster. He assembles a solid cast, led by Moriarty in the lead role; Ranger, Todd Field, Michael Cavanaugh, and Franklin himself all deliver strong supporting turns.
