Industry Reviews Gr 3-5 Dozens of amphibians are featured in these concise, clear, well-organized introductions. Each title briefly describes physical and behavioral characteristics; special traits distinguishing major families; a variety of individual species; diet; habitat; hunting and feeding methods; defense mechanisms; mating; birth and development of young; and hibernation. Excellent full-color photographs on nearly every page imbue the glistening subjects with a kind of slimy charm (some of the homely frog faces are peculiarly appealing). A chart near the end of each volume gives the scientific names of the major families. A minor flaw the average size is not given for all of the species. A number of excellent books about the ever-popular frog are readily available, such as Elizabeth Lacey's The Complete Frog (Lothrop, 1989) and Jane Dallinger and Sylvia Johnson's Frogs and Toads (Lerner, 1982). However, while Souza's offering covers similar information, it focuses on a greater number of species. Salamanders includes more detailed information, depicts more species, and has a more precise text than James Gerholdt's Salamanders (ABDO, 1994). Karey Wehner, San Francisco Public Library Lopate
