Album Notes Personnel: Paul Bley (piano); Steve Swallow (bass); Pete LaRoca (drums). Includes liner notes by Paul Haines. After his 1953 debut (on Charles Mingus' label), Canadian pianist Paul Bley spent the rest of that decade playing with Jackie McLean, Chet Baker, Ornette Colemen, Jimmy Giuffre, and a few others. FOOTLOOSE was essentially his fourth album (though live releases from within the time period have subsequently appeared). It is a trio set with bass player Steve Swallow and drummer Pete La Roca. At the time of this 1963 album, Paul Bley was married to the young and emerging composer Carla Bley. Five of her compositions set the tone for this work, as they would on other releases over the rest of the decade. Her writing, which employs a perfect blend of emotionalism and intellect, is perfectly suited to Bley's approach to the piano. Also included are a tune written by Coleman ("When Will the Blues Leave"), and two by Bley himself.
