About this Movie
Movie Description
Milos Forman directs this story of a birthday party for an elderly fireman.

Cast:Josef Svet
Director:Milos Forman

Synopsis
Milos Forman heads up the Czech New Wave by directing this story in which a retiring small-town 86-year-old fireman is treated to a farewell birthday ball by the rest of the brigade. The retiree, clearly a holdover from the prewar democratic society, represents the old values of personal decency and integrity, contrasting pointedly with his younger colleagues. The ball itself and the depiction of the townspeople take up most of the film. The characters range from gentle caricature to fierce satire. Highlights include a hastily arranged beauty contest with each girl getting uglier than the next; a table full of disappearing door prizes, with one seemingly gone every time the camera passes by; and then the perfect anti-climax to the evening, in which the final presentation of the award is made to the retiree. Gutsy and improvisational, this film provides a first look at the light-handed style that would permeate Forman's future works.
