Synopsis After graduating from college, Americans Mischa and Rachel move to Thailand where Rachel works as a first-grade teacher and Mischa sells a few uninspired freelance articles. On a tip, Mischa learns about the mysterious anthropologist Martiya van der Leun who overdosed on opium while serving a murder sentence in the local prison. Martiya's murder victim, Mischa learns, was a Christian missionary named David Walker, whose family worked to convert the (fictional) Thai hill tribe known as the Dyalo. Both Walker and Martiya shared an obsessive, if diametrically opposed, interest in the Dyalo, and as Mischa's delves deeper into their story, he finds his idle interest transforming into an obsession of his own--a fascination so strong that when Rachel leaves at the end of the year, Mischa stays behind, sucked into a world of sexual taboos, demon possession, and a vortex of cultural relativity.

Industry Reviews "There hasn't been a more readable story about religions in conflict since Somerset Maugham created Sadie Thompson. The fact that Berlinski gives the Christians a fair shake is a breath of fresh air." (12/28/2007)
